As a college student I believe that a college education serves the purpose of preparing us for our independent adult lives. College is a transitioning stage from living at home to living alone. While college students are technically living on their own, away from their parents, most college students are still supported by their parents and the school. College students are independent, in the way that they live away from the supervision from parents and get to make decisions they usually wouldn’t get to make. Besides helping students learn to be independent, college helps students learn skills they will need to know to get a job.

To be educated, means to have skills necessary to be successful. Being educated doesn’t mean going to college, it could be from a mentor. Like in The Mind at Work, they followed boys who didn’t go to college, but were being educated on plumbing. Being educated also includes going to college. Anything that a person learns that could help them be successful is being educated.

What lead me to my beliefs on education is from being in this class, Foundations of Writing. Reading articles and sections of books has changed my view on education. I used to think that the higher the degree a person has, the more successful they will be. Now from being in this class I believe that being educated doesn’t necessarily mean going to college, but going out in the world as well to learn more from people.
